College Counseling

At Putney, we believe college is a match to be made, not a prize to be won.

Our comprehensive college counseling program formally begins in 11th grade, but the relationship that students form with their teachers and advisors starts the moment they step on campus. At Putney our staff gets to know students on a personal level, so when it’s time to actively assist students as they research colleges, investigate careers and begin to make decisions about their lives after graduation, we’re ready to provide individually tailored guidance to set them up for success.

Application Assistance

All juniors attend a weekly College Planning seminar to familiarize themselves with the application process. Once they become seniors, they attend a weekly College Applications seminar in the fall to receive individualized and group support to help them complete their applications.

Timeline Communication

When it comes to college applications, we know there are a lot of deadlines and deliverables to keep track of. We help families stay on top of everything through individual meetings with students and parents, as well as frequent email updates to parents with reminders about important application process dates and to-do items.

Valuable Connections

All juniors and seniors have personalized online accounts to access Naviance, a nationally-recognized college counseling software resource. In the fall, more than 75 colleges and universities come to visit our school to meet with students. In October, we also host a college fair trip to Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts.

Essay Help

We offer a College Essay Workshop every Wednesday evening in the fall so students can perfect the submissions and let their unique voice shine. During our Senior College Essay Weekend in October, students receive personalized writing feedback from Putney faculty. Our teachers also craft comprehensive personalized School Report letters of recommendation for all seniors.

Testing

We understand the importance of standardized for the college admissions process, and want to ensure every student is able to partake.

  • PSAT: Administered in mid-October for all juniors.
  • ACT and SAT: Registration is provided for all juniors. Transportation to testing sites is provided while school is in session.
  • TOEFL: Transportation is provided for one fall and spring test date for test takers.
  • AP: Test proctoring is available for sophomores or juniors interested in taking an AP exam.

We also offer administrative support for families wishing to request accommodations for standardized testing.
