How to Apply

Most of our admission applications have been submitted and our admission committee is meeting every Wednesday this winter to consider each of the hundreds of students who has applied thus far.  There may still be time to consider your application in time to notify you by the traditional notification date of March 10th.  If we cannot make a thoughtful decision for March 10th, we are happy to consider applications and make admission decisions after the 10th on a rolling basis to whatever extent space permits.

Thanks for your interest in The Putney School! We have a rigorous application process that aims to uncover the depth of your intellectual motivations, creativity, and character. We find the most successful Putney students are individuals with self-discipline, intellectual curiosity, and a sense of commitment to their community.

Your application will consist of two main elements: a completed application with supporting documents, and an interview with a member of the Putney admission team. In many cases, students are able to visit campus and interview with us before our general application deadline of January 1st; in other cases, however, the visit or interview might happen after our deadline, but before March 10. International students or other applicants with extenuating circumstances may request a Skype interview, although we encourage them to visit campus before making a decision to attend Putney.

Our online application will require you to open an account and will provide functionality for completing essays, uploading files, and requesting teacher recommendations. When your application is complete, it will be evaluated by the Admission Committee, which includes admission staff, two faculty members, and four current students (seniors, for confidentiality reasons). We inform all applicants of our admission decision on March 10th. Contracts are sent out then, including financial aid grant information for accepted recipients.

Our Revisit Day is an opportunity for accepted candidates to spend substantial time on campus, talking with current students, asking questions of faculty, and getting a feel for the academic, creative, and physical opportunities at Putney. This year it is scheduled for April 8th. We expect to hear back from accepted candidates about their school matriculation decision by April 15th, and we should receive a signed enrollment contract by then.
 
Throughout the entire admission process, we want to open up our school to you. The Putney School is unique: in its curriculum, community, and approach. We hope you will ask many questions of current students, visit classes, and spend time sitting in assembly or at lunch just soaking up the energy of the school.

All this will go a long way toward your understanding how Putney challenges students and prepares them for a future of leadership, creativity, and responsibility to their community.
