College Counseling

The Putney School offers a comprehensive college counseling program that begins formally in the 11tth grade.  We believe, as Frank Sachs writes, that "College is a match to be made, not a prize to be won." To that end, we actively assist students as they research colleges, investigate careers and begin to make decisions about where they would like their lives to head after graduating from The Putney School. Whether your child's goal is Yale or the Peace Corps, Macalester or culinary school, our college counseling team's philosophy is that of supporting students and their families to maximize fit, options, and success.

We offer the following activities:

Individual Attention

  • Individual meetings with students, especially junior and seniors
  • Individual meetings and correspondence with parents of juniors and seniors
  • College discussions with any students interested in starting their process
  • All juniors attend a weekly College Planning seminar to familiarize themselves with the elements of the application process
  • All seniors attend a weekly College Applications seminar (fall) to get individualized and group support as they complete their applications
  • All juniors and seniors have personalized online accounts to access Naviance- a nationally-recognized college counseling software resource
  • Frequent email updates to parents with reminders about the application process timeline
  • Over 60 Colleges and universities come to visit our school to meet with individual students
  • Workshops such as:
  • Financial Aid & Scholarship Workshop – Fall Parent Weekend, let by Hampshire College Financial Aid Director
  • Senior College Essay Weekend (October) students have personalized writing feedback from Putney faculty
  • Optional October college fair trip to Northfield Mount Hermon School, MA
  • Optional May field trip to Colleges That Change Lives college event/fair, Boston
  • Comprehensive personalized School Report letters of recommendation crafted for all seniors


  • PSAT will be administered during mid October for all juniors
  • ACT and SAT test registration provided for all juniors
  • ACT and SAT transportation provided for tests administered while school is in session
  • Fall and Spring transportation dates provided for TOEFL test takers
  • AP test proctoring for sophomores or juniors interested in pursuing an AP exam
  • Administrative support for families wishing to request accommodations for standardized testing
