Directions to Campus Area Local Places to Stay

Schedule Your Visit

We encourage families to visit while school is in session so that students and parents have the opportunity to sit in on classes, connect with faculty, and ask questions of current students. Visits typically begin at 8:00 a.m., 9:45 a.m., or 1 p.m, and we aim for visits to include a student-led tour, a class visit, and in-depth interviews for students and parents by one of our admission counselors.

Visits are ideally made prior to the application deadline of January 1st, so please be in touch if you’d like to visit Putney this fall. Email Amara at, call us at 802-387-6219, or complete this inquiry form.

What Happens on a Putney Visit?

9:45 A.M.

The Admission Office is located in the Main Building, the white building straight ahead of you as you drive down our driveway. There you will check in with the Office Manager, Amara Cunningham, and meet members of the Admission team.

10:00  - 10:35 A.M.

All School Assembly or Sing

Assembly is a unique, energizing, community tradition in which the entire school comes together to share student performances and presentations, and hear from guest speakers. Assembly is led by either Emily Jones or the two student Heads of School. On Thursdays, Assembly is replaced with Sing, led by Musical Director Cailin Manson.

10:40  - 11:40 A.M.

Campus Tour

As is often the case at Putney, students take the lead. Our student tour guides show the campus to prospective students and their families together. This is an opportunity for you to hear one student's perspective, stop by the centers of student life, and glimpse a few of Putney's 500 rural acres. Make sure to mention any particular hopes you have for the tour, whether it be stopping by the blacksmithing studio or the horse barn.

11:45 A.M. - 12:45 P.M.

Class Visit
Option #1

Academic classes at Putney are rigorous, engaging and important for you to experience.  When you arrive at Putney, we will be able to suggest a class for you to sit in on. If you desire to visit a certain class or subject, please let Amara Cunningham know when you are scheduling your visit, so we can try to make that possible.

12:45  - 1:15 P.M.

We welcome you to join us for lunch at the KDU, which regularly serves farm-to-table food straight from the Elm Lea Farm and other local sources.

1:15 - 1:45 P.M.

Interviews are essential in discovering whether Putney would be a good fit for a prospective student. Our process consists of a 15-minute interview with the parent(s) or guardian(s), followed by a 15-minute interview with the student. All interviews are conducted by John Barrengos, Lois Barber, Michael Bodel or Jessa Harger.

1:45 - 2:45 P.M.

Class Visit
Option #2

If you wish to to sit in on a second class, you are welcome to stay for this block.

How should I dress?
Keep in mind that the school is part of a working farm and the tour will include a visit to the barn. Informal dress and "sensible shoes" recommended!

Should I bring anything with me when I visit?
You are welcome to bring any samples of your artwork ( visual artwork, music cd's, videos, or written pieces) although this is not required.

If I play an instrument, can I bring it to my interview?
Yes, if you are a musician, we invite you to bring your instrument to the school. We are very proud of our music program, and our music director is always eager to meet musicians.

What if I can't travel to Putney for an interview?
You can arrange for a Skype or a phone interview appointment with one of our Admission representatives. Our Skype address for international applicants is PutneyInternationalStudentOffice, and for domestic applicants it is PutneySchoolAdmission.

What if I have been diagnosed with learning differences?
In order for us to determine whether Putney and our Learning Center can serve your educational needs, we prefer that students who have been identified with learning differences or disabilities share this information at the outset of the admission process. Please send along any professional evaluations to Amara Cunningham in advance of your visit, or when it becomes available.
